6 Benefits to Goal-Setting as a Couple
/Early in our relationship, I wanted to sit down and set goals with Ashley. She was hesitant.
I mean I was just 4-years-old when I went through my first goal-setting program. Isn’t that something everyone does from a young age?
Going through that program (and many others like it) is why I have dedicated my life to personal development and strive to set goals in all aspects of my life. It’s helped me to build a successful business, assist my clients in strategic planning, complete graduate school, and speak over 100 times in the past couple of years.
The closest Ashley had been to setting a goal was giving something up for Lent.
I wanted to grow deeper in our relationship by setting goals together. But she saw it as a point of conflict and was unsure of the benefits.

Goals provide a shared direction. If you are not where you want to be, you can change it by setting goals together.
Goals help you focus on the future rather than wallow in the past. If there’s a storied history in your relationship and issues have been resolved, the focus can be moved to all the things you can do together in your future.
Written goals lead to clarity. Goals help you determine what matters most to you and your partner.
Goals reduce uncertainty. Couples don’t perform at their best in an environment of uncertainty. Uncertainty leads to frustration, anger, and fights.
Goals draw resources. When you set meaningful goals your needs usually will be met (not always as fast as you would like) -- so speak them into existence and manifest them!
When you set goals you maximize your individual strengths and bring out the best in your partner and relationship.
